Course Overview:

Project controls are the quiet engine behind every successful build. This foundational course shows you how to use them as a daily operating discipline to manage residential projects from preconstruction through closeout and warranty.

You will learn how to set clear expectations, monitor progress in real time, identify and resolve issues early and maintain strong communication across your team. The course focuses on practical tools and habits that help you manage key control points, keep accurate documentation and make informed decisions that protect scope, schedule, quality and homeowner satisfaction.

Through real-world scenarios, you will explore how project controls support field operations, trade coordination, inspections, turnover readiness and post-close responsibilities. You will also learn how to navigate common challenges like scope gaps, defects, punch items and warranty concerns without losing momentum.

By the end of this course, you will know how to manage transitions from pre-close to homeowner orientation, turnover and beyond. You will walk away with a repeatable system you can apply immediately to keep your residential construction projects aligned, reduce risk and deliver smoother, more predictable outcomes.

When you finish this course, you’ll be able to:

• Set clear project expectations, including scope, plans and specifications, quality standards, schedule milestones and team roles.
• Monitor jobsite progress through field conditions, trade coordination, and readiness checkpoints.
• Identify and address issues, such as punch items, defects, scope gaps, homeowner concerns and warranty items.
• Document and communicate effectively using logs, photos, notices, handoff information and escalation paths.
• Manage key transitions including pre-close, homeowner orientation, turnover, closeout and post-close obligations.

NAHB Credit: This course counts for 3 continuing education credits.
