Course Overview:

Build a job costing system that tracks costs and actively drives profitability. This course delivers a practical, systems-based approach to job costing, showing you how to connect estimating and budgeting into one cohesive process that supports better decisions and stronger financial performance.

You’ll learn how to translate estimates into accurate job cost budgets using the NAHB Chart of Accounts and establish a clear workflow from pre-construction through job completion. The course focuses on assigning every dollar correctly, from direct labor to overhead and indirect costs, so you can see true cost of sales and job-level profitability in real time.

Through real-world applications, you’ll develop the financial skills needed to manage labor burden, analyze billable hours, recover overhead and maintain healthy gross profit margins. You’ll also explore how to use variance analysis, job progress reviews and post-job audits to catch issues early, fix estimating gaps and prevent profit erosion before it’s too late.

By the end of this course, you’ll have the tools to “know your numbers,” including breakeven analysis, markup strategies and performance tracking by job type, team and execution. You’ll walk away with a job costing system that supports consistent profitability and long-term business health.

When you finish this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Define and implement a complete job costing process that aligns estimates, job cost budgets and the NAHB Chart of Accounts.
  • Accurately capture and allocate labor, labor burden and indirect costs to reveal true cost of sales and profitability.
  • Match estimates to job cost budgets using unitized pricing, assemblies and logical naming conventions for field and office alignment.
  • Perform variance analysis throughout the job lifecycle to identify estimating errors, operational issues and margin slippage.
  • Analyze overhead, breakeven points, markup and gross profit targets to make informed financial decisions.
